Facebook Shuts Down Places and Deals: One year after the launch of Places, and just four months after launching Deals, Facebook is shutting down both services.
Places, a location based sharing service, allowed users to “check in” to locations and notify friends, but was never able to challenge Foursquare for an audience.
Deals, a social discount app, was meant to compete with rivals Groupon and LivingSocial, but like Places, never really took off. The services are expected to shut down in the coming weeks.
